Margherita Malanchini is a PhD student at Goldsmiths College, University of London, United Kingdom. Her PhD, conducted under the supervision of Dr Yulia Kovas and funded by the Economic and Social Research Council –ESRC, investigates the non-cognitive factors (such as motivation and anxiety) implicated in mathematical learning. Specifically, Margherita’s PhD uses genetically sensitive methodology to investigate the aetiology of mathematics anxiety and motivation; exploring their longitudinal association with mathematical achievement and the selection Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics –STEM career choices. The project also investigates the neural correlates of mathematics anxiety using EEG methodology cross-culturally (UK, Russia and USA).

In November 2013, Margherita spent two weeks in Moscow working with InLab’s, the research laboratory directed by Dr Yulia Kovas, Russian collaborators at the Psychological Institute of the Russian Academy of Education. In Moscow, Margherita joined an international team of researchers and PhD students, supervised by Professor Sergey Malykh, coming from numerous cities in Russia and Kirgizstan. During this two-weeks internship, Margherita had the opportunity of taking part in various research activities. These included training in EEG data collection and data analysis using EEG Lab. This was a fantastic experience that provided Margherita with excellent training, extremely relevant to her PhD research, and with the opportunity to become acquainted with InLab’s international collaborators.
